Memorials to the Future

How citizens and neighbourhoods can bounce back stronger through deliberation and art

‘Memorials to the Future’ is an open-source tool for communities to find meaning and commit to change across Europe via an infrastructure of deliberation and art. Europe can come out this crisis stronger, if we look forward and learn from the crisis to overcome our immunity to change. Called ‘Memorials to the Future’, it is built around three steps:

1. Neighbours discuss online

Based on the prize-winning and highly user-friendly platform, this online tool pairs neighbours to hold conversations over the phone, whatsapp or by videoconference about lessons to be learnt from the crisis.

2. Innovative deliberative workshops

The online discussions then inform innovative deliberative workshops that help elicit people’s vision for the future and understand the roots of our individual and collective immunities to change. These are conducted offline if possible, else online.

3. Collaborative murals

The results of the deliberations then feed into collaborative murals whereby the participants who took part in the earlier stages bring to life their conclusions from the crisis, their vision for the future, and their commitments onto the walls of their cities, under the guidance of experienced artists, for everyone to see.

With a Memorial to the Future, you allow meaning to emerge that is both localized and shareable

  • With its visual component and open source approach, it will have high dissemination potential
  • Thanks to the involvement of communities in painting their own murals, it will leave a lasting reminder of their thoughts and commitments in the public space.

This model is informed by our expertise of deliberative practices:

  • It combines highly accessible on- and offline deliberation.
  • It enables neighbours to start a conversation about Covid-19 or any relevant topic, matching neighbours in a safe format, whether they have differing or converging views.
  • Citizen deliberation is traditionally based on a very rational model of conversation that is not necessarily easy for all to join, and its traces – words – are not tangible to all. Our approach goes beyond such a “words only” and sometimes inaccessible notion of citizen deliberation, by allowing one-to-one talks, a citizen agora, and a visual translation.
  • It thus allows emotions to have a constructive outlet, as part of a deliberative infrastructure

The New Dialogue Foundation

The New Dialogue Foundation connects people with different opinions for respectful discussions outside filter bubbles. Its online platform anderemeinungen can be adapted. It connects people with different opinions and helps them to lead a respectful discussion, thereby giving them the possibility to leave their own filter bubble in order to learn from or to convince others.
